about

Chaos loops is based on a series of unstable drones, clicks, and electronic noises made from a feeding-back guitar put through an array of effects. The effects contain random elements and pitch shifters that are constantly failing to find a stable note. This produces unpredictable self-generating soundscapes; sometimes gentle and ambient and sometimes atonal but way more interesting than a simple repeating loop. Four unstable sonic environments were set up and David Hopewell and Duncan Black used them as a basis for improvisation. The results vary from a gentle detailed piece, "Double Helix" that would sit happily on an adventurous ambient album to "Shatners Bassoon" which is brutally atonal. It was all recorded in one take with no planning (the unstable feedback environments are impossible to replicate) and only a couple of edits.
